Smart, and visually striking, with great voice work by Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, Paul Rudd, and many more. It’s a charming adaptation of the 1943 novella by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry that has become a beloved classic (but the only one to try and stretch the story to a full-length feature). This was once a Netflix original (in the States at least), but it has since been released on Blu-ray and now is available on other streamers too. It really defined the onscreen persona of Jimmy Stewart and has become a beloved film around the world, even in warm weather.

This is no mere Christmas movie but a story about the impact that one man can have on an entire community. It’s a Wonderful Lifeįrank Capra’s classic often gets a ton of replay around the holidays, but it’s the kind of heart-warmer that works all year long.
A nominee for Best Picture, it was one of the biggest films of 1971, and played repeatedly on television in the ‘70s and ‘80s. It stars Topol as Tevye, a Jewish milkman trying to marry off his five daughters in his small village. Norman Jewison directed the 1971 adaptation of the 1964 Broadway musical of the same name, and the result was a smash hit. Dante himself had some issues with the final product, which was rushed to meet a release date and then fell in the big shadow of Back to the Future, but the film gained an audience over the years, in no small part because of the careers that Hawke and Phoenix would develop. Joe Dante directed this beloved 1985 sci-fi/adventure film starring Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix in their film debuts. Steve Carell stars as Evan Baxter, reprising his role from the original and the new guy who hears directly from God (Morgan Freeman), who tells the new savior to start building an ark. But if one looks at the 2007 follow-up as a kids’ movie, it makes a bit more sense. It was probably a mistake to make a sequel to the smash hit Bruce Almighty without Jim Carrey, the main reason it was a smash hit in the first place. Paul Reubens returns as Pee-Wee, who gets tangled up in a circus story that also includes roles for Kris Kristofferson, Penelope Ann Miller, and Valeria Golino. It lacks the non-stop creativity of Tim Burton’s original but there’s enough joyous lunacy in the 1988 sequel adventure for Pee-Wee Herman to justify a look. A worldwide smash, it’s hard to believe it’s almost a half-century old. It started with this 1974 family classic about the lovable stray, which would spawn eight sequels after it made $45 million on a budget of around half a million. Benjiīelieve it or not, there was a time when a mutt named Benji was one of the biggest stars in the world. At first, he barely tries, but this is the classic underdog sports movie for a reason. Pushing the boundaries of what would be acceptable in a kids movie, it’s a surprisingly raw and realistic story of an alcoholic and former minor league pitcher who ends up coaching a Southern California Youth Baseball League. Walter Matthau rules in this Michael Ritchie classic from 1976. Despite the charm of young Keanu, the 1961 version is better, a vibrant classic for all ages that stars Ray Bolger, Tommy Sands, Annette Funicello, and Ed Wynn.
